Housing Strike Force, CA-COVID Rent Relief Program, Partner Spotlight & New Team Member

I hope 2022 is off to a great start for all of you. In this newsletter, we’ll discuss the newly created “Housing Strike Force.”

On November 3, 2021, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the creation of a “Housing Strike Force” within California’s Department of Justice. According to a press release issued by the Attorney General’s office, the Housing Strike Force is “part of DOJ’s new effort to advance housing access, affordability, and equity in California” and will “draw on the expertise of attorneys from the Land Use and Conservation Section, the Consumer Protection Section, the Civil Rights Enforcement Section, and the Environment Section’s Bureau of Environmental Justice to address the housing crisis and to alleviate its effects.”

As a friendly reminder, the California COVID-19 Rent Relief Program is still accepting applications. To recap, here are some high-level details about the Program:

  • Free financial assistance is available to landlords and renters who need help with unpaid or future rent or utilities.

  • Landlords and renters are both encouraged to apply.

  • Income-eligible applicants may qualify regardless of immigration status and will not be required to show proof of citizenship.

  • Assistance from the CA COVID-19 Rent Relief program does NOT count as earned income (for renters) and will NOT affect eligibility for any other state benefit assistance programs, such as CalFresh or CalWORKS.

  • All applicant information is kept private and will not be shared.

  • Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis. Priority assistance will be given to income eligible households most at-risk of eviction.

  • Once an application has been successfully processed, both the landlord and renter will be notified of next steps.

If someone you know is behind on rent because of the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, please share this information with them so that they can apply for rental assistance immediately.

Team Member Spotlight

We are thrilled to welcome our newest team member: Executive Assistant Vicky Dionisio! Vicky joined Tenant Law Group in November 2021. She is responsible for supporting and assisting Chief Operating Officer Nicole Lionetti and Managing Attorney Vikranth A. Sunderraj, Esq. Additionally, she oversees discreet projects within the firm and provides backup support to litigation teams as a Case Manager. Prior to joining Tenant Law Group, Vicky worked as an office assistant in the medical field. She has also worked in clothing design and event planning. When she is not working, she enjoys carpentry. In addition to English, Vicky speaks Tagalog.
